Hacking this site seems pointless, I do not understand what individuals get out of it ?

Hello Brian,

Beyond understanding, like breaking off little trees in the park...

My question is even more basic: what hacking in this context actually means? (Non-native, you know!)

Just the pleasure of breaking in?

... Hi all and ARW; sorry, checked my auto down loads, seems my browser up-dated without a pop-up displayed, and reset all my settings... dam up-dates.

Hello Agustin,

As far as I know, "hacking" was the word used for programming. There was another word, which I can't for the life of me remember, meaning unauthorised entry to another's computer. Later, though, "hacking" took on the pejorative meaning it has now, meaning to hack into another computer - often, but not necessarily, for malicious reasons.

There recently has been a case here of someone breaking into American government computers and they want to put him away for life. Since he appears to be innocent, if misguided - he was looking for proof of aliens! - what they _should_ be doing was offering to employ him as he was successful against all their highly paid security efforts!

They probably would have, had it not become public. In the event, they had to save face and use him as an example.
Thank you for not breeding.
