I bought some components from Digikey. I expected the VAT, I did not expect (apparently neither did Digikey) a minimum £11 "dispersal fee" from UPS.

UPS tell me that when the customer is not an existing UPS account holder (that is, basically any private individual), they have a delay between paying the VAT to HMRC, and receiving the VAT from me.

UPS phoned me the day it arrived and I gave UPS my card details.

Some delay.

So, if you get anything shippped by UPS from outside the EU, they will clobber you a minimum £11 that you may not expect.

Yes it is the case that you pay such a fee, regardless of whether it's UPS or any other (DHL, Royal Mail etc.)

Brokerage on a $1,000 camera was £11.00 with UPS and some perfume from NY was still £7 with Royal Mail.

They do have to shell out VAT on your behalf before recouping it from you, but it does mean you get your goods more quickly.

The downside is that it's not cost effective on the smallest orders. Unfortunately it is a standard aspect of shipping costs.

Hmm..

Is that definately the case Alan ?

I have previously ordered vitamin pills, also books from the USA, and I do not remember this type of charge.

Now if books are VAT exempt, that explains those, but not the vitamins - I definately paid VAT on those, and I think I paid only the VAT, not a "dispersion charge"

Would you happen to recall which courier it was? Maybe there's a limit above which they enforce the brokerage costs. Below a certain value they might let it through.
