i found this video which seems very clearly explained, and a welcome change from the wobbly cell-phone footage!

I discovered yesterday that the PicStart Plus is no longer manufactured.

Presumably because the truly dire MplabX doesn't support it.

i think i'm right in saying PICstart+ was phased out just before the final versions of MPLAB 8.xx; (the last IDE which supported ALL their programmers)which annoyed me greatly,as there was no direct replacement..unless you have the £££ for a promate3,PLUS a range of socket modules, almost 1 for each PIC,at £££ each.

i thought the whole idea of the upgrade module for the PICstart was to extend usefullness for several years to come;obviously they had a change of heart...maybe thinking ISCP would dominate;but who would put an ISP header on a PCB with a 'OTP' chip for example?!!!

microchip have a knack for killing really popular tools and replacing them with,er,'not so popular' ones.(polite version!)

I've got a lab full of PicStart+ which will no longer program the more modern versions of PIC that my esteemed customers seem to love.

I now have to justify the purchase of 30 or so PICKIT3, which ain't going to go down well at the moment.

If anyone is really stuck, then the open source Piklab package (http://piklab.sourceforge.net) might be useful. It is only command line for windows but provides a full GUI using KDE on Linux.

I have two PICStart +, both of which are flash upgradable and both are pretty much useless to me.

Shame, they were lovely pieces of equipment.
