came accross this super-simple idea for avoiding having to solder on a SIL-6 pin header to EVERY board you make...even if may only ever get programmed once! click on 'The PIC Micro' heading

I sometimes use a short piece of sprung edge-connector for the same end.

It simply pushes on/off the veroboard (or PCB fingers).
