Hi,

My apologies if this topic has already been "done", but...

Does anyone know the part number(s) for currently available MSF receiver chips (or reasonably priced modules)?

There seem to be a lot of references to datasheets for U4226B, UE6002 & E0C6S37, but I can't find anyone to supply these. They appear to originate from the 1990s, so maybe out of production (?).

I found a supplier of UE6002-based modules, but, unless you're going into mass production, these come to about £45, including an antenna. Way over my budget!

Maybe there's a simpler alternative.....

Regards

Perro,

If your a student or related to an education department (or perhaps know somebody who is) you may be able to get one from here for free:

Joe, thanks for the heads-up.

As I'm a lab technician for a well-known university, I'll drop Galleon an email and see what I can blag from them :-)

Cheers,

Dave

I'm interested in this too. Decoding the time and date looks to be straightforward enough - has anyone built a receiver?

btw - it's no longer rugby. It's Cumbria :-)

I've built one before, using the decoding routines from John Becker's Time Machine, but with improved error checking routines that I cobbled together myself.

It's well worth finding the Time Machine source code on EPE's web site.

I built the receiver portion of the clock from Wireless World in 1976 or so.

It sort of works.

When I had it hooked up to a Tek digiscope with a loooooong timebase setting you could see the propogation characteristics changing during the day.

At least, that's what I think I was seeing.

It wasn't really very good in this steel framed building, though MSF comes storming through on a HP3586 selective level meter.

Hello all,

I think there was something in Practical Wireless a year or not many ago. I'll have a look later.

Interestingly, having looked @ the link from Joe, it appears the free version for sutdents is from the same people who sell the solution for around £45 (ex-vat) for non-students

The NPL publishes this spec' for MSF's signal: MSF_Time_Date_Code.pdf

As Andrew metnioned, the data format doesn't look too difficult to understand, but I'm not sure about how I'd build a good receiver (plus, I've never tried any kind of signal processing - YET!).

Cheers

Hello all,

"Practical Wireless" July and September 2008. The articles didn't cover any of the decoding part, I don't remember anything subsequently but I could be wrong.

"PW" is

and the author, Tony Nailer, is on

This supplier has some interesting modules that might be of interest.

@ Ant. Thanks for the links

@Gordon. Thanks. That's about a third of the price of the units I saw. I've just emailed them, asking for cost of shipping to the UK...
