A shop in Liverpool is currently selling a 4.8V Ni-Cad battery AND a mains charger for 10P (that is NOT a spelling mistake - 10 pence). They were made for 'New Bright' remote control cars.

I only bought two because I still have a few left of the ones for which I paid £1 a few months back

I know advertising is not allowed in this chatzone but if anyone is interested, send me a personal message and I 'll give you directions.

John.

Hi John,
Your PM settings are "switched off"
It wouldn't be PRS in Dale Street, would it?
Regards
GF

Is PRS still going? I used to spend many happy hours there searching through the surplus bins.

It was a when I last was there a couple of years ago and it still shows in google although they don't seem to have their own website.
I agree about the "junk boxes" great fun and some good finds.

John,
It says you dont accept private emails.
Can you say who they are and/or a phone number.
If they dont have a website, I'm struggling.

OK, I'll just post it here (hang the consequences).

The shop is called JR's and is on Walton Vale a few doors down from the Windsor Castle Pub (L9).

Walton Vale is the continuation of Rice Lane which is currently in total chaos due to road works.

I don't know how many are left but there were at least another dozen out on display when I bought mine.

I had forgotten about PRS. I suppose I should have bought a lot and sold them on to PRS to make them more available. The only trouble is that they would lose their 10p price tag.

Just been down to the shop to check things: It is actually called "JR's Discount" The pub has now changed its name to the "Windsor" and the shop is opposite Blessed Sacrament Church.

I spoke to the owner who says he has 'pallets' of these things. The price drop is due to one of his shops closing down. He has another shop in Market Street, Earlstown (St Helens) if that helps.

He told me that he also bid on the RC cars but was outbid, that's how he got lumbererd with all the batteries - that's life!

I hope all this helps,

John.

what a small world
i know both shops well!

but now i live in france, the land of EXPENSIVE...

though i have seen these things on sale as clearance lines here for 3E reduced from 7.99;though these are the deluxe versions with NiMh cells
i bought one ages ago to use as a battery supply for proto boards, but haven't got around to making a 5v switch mode reg.

be aware that old nicads soon crystalise and become useless;as ive seen too often buying old cordless phones for their batteries...phoooey!
they may be sold off as they are genuine 'surplus'',or maybe because they are complete C**p;
they are manufactured very cheaply by the zillion and often hang around in warehouses for years...
so suck it and see,as the saying goes;
before you buy a box fulland then expect some dud's c'est la vie (ooh er! breaks into naughty french

Hi,
I've just had the most bizarre of phone conversations: I phoned JR's Discount, which I understood to be the place where you get the batteries. No-one was available with a brain-cell and I was left talking to this girl. My head is still spinning. She told me that the shop has always been JR's Discount ( never PRS apparently ) and that they dont sell any electrical gear apart from an odd lamp. Surely this cant be the right place?
She also said that no-one was there apart from her and she'd never heard of any batteries. So far so good. 'When should I call?' She said, "well, if you're not willing to call tomorrow, then you'll have to wait till Tuesday" Uh! Did I say that? I gave up.

back to square one.

JR discount does,or did?(i havn't been in years) the friday market in earlestown (newton le willows)try this for the batteries

they arrive with a fully loaded truck/s with averything palletised and take up several pitches, mostly fancy goods.

their earlestown shop is on the corner of the street facing the banks and the red cross shop, which is just up the pedestrian bit from the market

hows that for a trip down memory lane!

I agree with hackinblack completely. Many a time I have had to throw out Ni-Cads with white crystals oozing out of them. But it seems only to happen with cells that I have charged and allowed to go flat, when I buy them new they always seem to work fine off the shelf. I often wonder if they are shipped in some 'safe' state ? ? ?

This is no guarantee but I have used four out of the ten that I have bought and they have all been OK. However I should point out that I have only been using them on light loads (Running PIC circuits).

John.
