The Microchip Data sheet for the 16F88 says that the minimum supply voltage, Vdd is 4.0 Volts.
The same data sheet also says that the minimum supply voltage for the 16LF88 is 2.0 Volts.

I am using a PIC 16F88 with a supply voltage of 3.0 Volts to drive several LEDs from the ports and it appears to operate perfectly well at this supply voltage, and below, for this simple application, even though it is out of spec.

Does any one know if there is any unforeseen problem with doing this or should it be OK?

Cheers

James.

The 16F88 and 16LF88 quite possibly come from the same wafer. The only difference is that the LF has been tested down to 2.0v ( and passed, of course! )

Not all chips come off the wafer with the same performance.

The same is true with clock rate - I did some experiments about 4 years ago with overclocking PICs. The basic conclusion is "your mileage may vary"!

Thanks Chaps!

About the brown-out...

With the brown-out bit set to 1, in the configuration word, both versions of the chip reset when the supply voltage drops to 4.0V.

With the brown-out bit reset to 0, this reset doesn't happen and both chips seem to function OK well below 4.0V.

Cheers

James.
